LOS BRAVÚ - VOLTA NY 2020

MARZO 4, 2020 - METROPOLITAN WEST N.Y.

Lyle O. Reitzel gallery presents up-and-coming Spanish Dúo Los Bravú in the prestigious art fair VOLTA New York 2020 with, March 4-8 2020 at their new location on
Metropolitan West N.Y.

For this solo show in Volta Los Bravú present a selection of paintings and works on paper made on both sides of the Atlantic. An artistic journey between West Africa and the Caribbean, specifically between two countries that the artists know in depth: the Dominican Republic and Senegal. In the latter, the infamous memory of slavery on the island of Gorée survives, from which more than twenty million people were enslaved from the 16th to 19th century, bringing with them a whole melting pot of African cultures throughout the world. Understanding our present means appreciating the imprint of this cultural diaspora and the heritage it has left in all of us.

The art of Los Bravú is a constant reformulation of the academic resources of Renaissance and Baroque painting, worked from an ironic viewpoint that puts the eye on the peripheries both social and cultural. Through images loaded with customs, they generate a strongly narrative pictorial language. A game through the portrait that turns the everyday into a myth, and in this way aims to elevate the figure of the African descendant to the place of dignity that Western art seemed to have vetoed.

A good part of the pictorial production of Los Bravú was born as a result of their residences throughout different countries around the world. In these trips the artists try to strengthen strong ties with the local people, which has allowed them not only to maintain a close sentimental relationship in the places visited, but also to know in depth each culture and society from an anthropological perspective.
